Apsana Begum is the UK Member of Parliament for Poplar and Limehouse and is a passionate advocate for multiculturalism and multilingualism. She is dedicated to promoting the importance of preserving endangered languages and the cultural heritage they represent.
Ms. Begum is a fluent speaker of the Sylheti language, which is spoken by a large community in the UK and around the world. The Sylheti language is considered to be endangered, with its literary heritage, history and identity at risk of being lost. Apsana Begum is passionate about protecting the Sylheti language and culture and has been actively involved in efforts to revitalise the language and preserve its literary heritage.
Ms. Begum been supporting efforts to revitalise endangered language. She has also been active in promoting policies that support multiculturalism and multilingualism through her work. She is a supporter of education policies that promote multilingualism and has been a vocal advocate for the inclusion of minority languages in the curriculum.
Her unique perspective as both a Member of Parliament and a speaker of the Sylheti language makes her an invaluable asset to our conference and celebration of International Mother Language Day on February 21st, 2023. We are honoured to have her as a guest speaker and look forward to hearing her speak on how we can work together to protect endangered languages and the cultural heritage they represent. She will also speak about importance of regulating the interpreting and translation profession in the UK.
